With the NHL trade deadline less than a week away, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving might have revealed his true cards with a disappointing statement for most franchise fans. Treliving appeared to temper fans' expectations for a major move ahead of the March 7 deadline after the Leafs were linked to some high-profile players in the past few days.

Treliving spoke to the media Saturday in Pittsburgh, and it sounds like adding one of the more impactful players available is less likely.

Treliving, however, confirmed the Maple Leafs are actively pursuing a depth, two-way forward, and he revealed the franchise is targeting a new type of player: a defenseman, which would also be of interest before the March 7 deadline, per Joshua Kloke of The Athletic.

There are reasons to think Schenn would be a good fit with Toronto, but is he the best fit ahead of next week's trade deadline? Maybe not.
