The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from now until Wednesday at 5 a.m. for much of Virginia and North Carolina.
Rising floodwaters led to dozens of rescues and the evacuation of an elementary school as forecasters warned of widespread flash flooding through midweek.
At 6:58 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued in east-central Wake, northeastern Johnston, Nash, and eastern Franklin counties. It came a minute after the NWS said a severe thunderstorm was located in Elm City, eight miles south of Nashville, moving northeast at 50 m.p.h.
Up to 5 inches of rain had fallen in parts of Allegany County, Maryland, as of Tuesday afternoon. Rainfall rates were up to 1 to 2 inches an hour.
Parts of North Carolina still recovering from Helene could see 5 inches of rain. Flash flooding concerns strecthed into Pennsylvania.
